Ghost stones: a hidden threat to the sea

May 09, 2025

Dag frode Aasnes

Every year, tens of thousands of pots disappear along our coast, and many of them become ghost pots – lost fishing gear that continues to catch animals without control. In Norway alone, it is estimated that between 20,000 and 30,000 pots are lost annually. These pots remain on the seabed and can trap crabs, lobsters and fish for years, which eventually die unnecessarily.

Why are the tins disappearing?
🔹 Bad weather and strong currents account for as much as 40–50% of losses – storms, strong currents and ice can tear loose tins and carry them far away.
🔹 Theft and sabotage are a hidden but significant cause of ghost fishing. Fishermen constantly experience their fishing gear being stolen or damaged, leading to gear going missing and continuing to fish unchecked.

This is not only an environmental problem, but also an economic loss for fishermen. Solutions that TrapSaver™ can help reduce the loss of fish and thus minimize ghost fishing. By using new technology, we can protect both fish resources and those who live off the sea.
